FAQ

Q : How can I backup or restore my Foliobook portfolio

A : You can use iTunes to backup and restore your iPad. iTunes does this automatically but only keeps the last sync as a backup, its a good idea to perform an extra backup when you have finished setting up your portfolio and naming it so that if anything happens you can restore this. Instructions on backup and restore can be found on this page

Q : I can’t edit anything, add pictures, edit the home page etc

A : You have probably locked the app. To unlock it, close the app and open the iPad preferences. In the left column scroll down until you find the Foliobook icon, you can then find a switch to turn the lock off. Reopen Foliobook and you should be good to go.

Q : One or more of the links are not working on the home page

A : There was a bug in versions before 2.0 which caused the logo/title text to obscure buttons/links even when it was disabled and not visible in edit mode. To stop this, double tap to enter edit mode, then open the preferences (pencil) menu on the home page and go to Common->Title and Logo and enable the title, then move it so that it does not cover the button/link areas.

Q :  Can I get rid of the status bar and time on the home page?

A :  There is a bug that sneaked in with Apple’s 4.3 release. It wasn’t  well documented in their API change information so it crept up unawares. The version 2  update is currently with Apple and hopefully will become available in the next week or so, that has a fix for this problem.

Q :  Email isn’t working, images are not being sent

A :  Occasionally this happens because an email server does not like the way we are embedding images inline in the emails. Unfortunately this is currently out of our control and we do not have a solution for it. However the problem often is intermittent and will go away after a day or two.

Q: What size images should I use?

A: For the best visual transitions we suggest you to stick to images sized around 1024×768 in size as this will result in the smoothest presentation. Very large images can be loaded, but transitions may appear less smooth than with more modestly sized images. However of course you may want to load larger images if you need to zoom into details. Note that we have a lightroom export plugin for people with Adobe Lightroom that will help export correctly sized images if you choose to go for the smaller images. http://www.foliobook.mobi/2010/07/lightroom-export-plug-in-for-foliobook/ Some people have preferred the look of slightly larger images, up to 2000 px on a long edge, however we don’t notice any improvement ourselves and recommend the earlier size to keep memory use to a minimum.

Q: I’ve gone into Foliobook and changed the home screen and added some pictures, but now I’ve forgotten how to get back to the home screen.

A: You can use a pinch gesture to go back to the home screen. Or you can tap on the picture to show the menu bar at the top and select the ‘Home’ button

Q :  Is there some way to lock the app completely so that users stay in the app

A :  There is no way a developer can lock a single app on the iPad. This is Apples decision, and a lot of people would like this feature which we refer to a true ‘Kiosk Mode’.  If you would like this feature please contact Apple support and request it, over time it may persuade them to permit this.

Q :  Sometimes the app changes a page without me touching/requesting this

A :  This may indicate that the iPad is low on memory. When this happens Foliobook is sent a warning signal that memory is getting low and we have to close a window to free up enough memory to prevent a crash. If you see this happening, just reboot the iPad to release spare memory that other apps are hogging.

Q :  What should I do or not do before an important presentation

A :  Firstly we advise rebooting the iPad, this can free up a lot of memory used by other apps and can help reduce the likelihood of occasional crashes.  Secondly DONT install an update (unless we’ve advised you to) and don’t update iOS on your iPad. Such changes will almost always be safe to do, however if there are problems lurking on odd occasions, updating app or OS may be the thing that triggers/exposes a problem.
