Having a problem with Foliobook? Let us know and we’ll do our best to help you figure it out. The FAQ may be the quickest way to resolve a problem in many cases.
Latest Version is 2.3
Current status. 2.3 is getting some good reviews and appears to have cured some of the instability issues left over from the 2.0 introduction. With 2.4 we will fix a few remaining known and small problems while introducing a new feature. We will also make more effort in communicating how to use the app, because its very flexibility and customisability makes it a bit harder to learn than we’d like. The first thing we have done is to add some new screencasts/videos that show how to use the 2.3 version.
Tips
Photos and Videos need to be in ‘Albums’ when they are synced to the iPad
When assembling your photo folder on PC or Mac to sync to iTunes, photos and videos need to be in named folders, these then become ‘Albums’ in the iPad photo app. Foliobook can only see images if they are in ‘Albums’ on the iPad. If you are having trouble seeing your pictures in the import dialog and have already turned on location services, this may solve your problem. We have a blog post giving more detail on how to do this.
Making sure Photos and Videos are in an iPad album
Location services need to be turned on
In Foliobook 1.11 we added the ability to add multiple images in one operation, or to add a whole folder of images at once.
To do this we used a new Apple facility that provides access to the metadata in images, this includes the location where the images were photographed. We don’t use that information currently, but the very fact we use this new Apple facility means that Foliobook now needs to be allowed to access your Location. We don’t use your current location in any way, so this might seem confusing, but hey… its Apple and we have to accept the occasional eccentricity in exchange for the design and beauty that it comes along with.
So to add pictures with Foliobook, you *must* allow Foliobook to ‘know your location’ even if we never actually try to access that information.
If you find that your Foliobook gets stuck with a ‘Loading’ message when adding pictures, just go to your settings menu -> General -> Location Services and make sure that is turned on, and that Foliobook is enabled in that menu.
Once you’ve added pictures you can turn it off again, as we don’t need it switched on.
Note that in iOS 4.2 Apps can be ‘backgrounded’ ie: running and retaining their settings but iconised. So restarting an app requires a bit more work than just hitting the round button on the iPad. If you have problems with your app unable to add pictures, and you have just enabled location services then you have to properly stop and restart the app.
To do this, double click the round button on the iPad. Find the Foliobook icon, hold down a touch on it until you see the ‘-’ sign and select that (it just stops Foliobook properly as with all other apps, it won’t delete it from the iPad in this instance).
Then you can restart Foliobook and all should work as before, but with the new functionality.
Keep single image imports to 25 or below
If you experience problems such as crashing when loading large folders through the ‘load a folder’, or when loading large numbers of images in a single operation you may need to reduce the numbers of images loaded at one time. In this case galleries can still contain 100 images, but you’ll need to add them in smaller batches for the time being.
Common problems solved.
Many crash problems can be solved by using what we call the ‘IT Crowd Strategy’.
1. The relatively small amount of memory in the iPad can sometimes get a bit fragmented, causing crashes. So if you are seeing crashes, turn the iPad off completely, then turn it on again, that may well fix things.
2. If you continue to get crashes after doing 1. then you may have had a corrupted download from the App store, this happens about one time in every few hundred downloads. To fix this, delete the app completely from your iPad, then go into iTunes and find the app using the top left menu in iTunes and delete the app from there as well. Now go and re-download Foliobook again, you have to go through the buying process, but you will not be charged.
Foliobook 2.3 known issues.
Most of these are fixed in the 2.4 update coming soon
- When adding images some folders may say they contain zero images even if they contain some images
- Positioning of free menus is not very intuitive
- Left control button in slideshow is not working correctly using version 1 transitions
- Using the wipe transition with fill mode is not working correctly using version 2 transitions
FAQ
Q1: What size images should I use?
A1: For the best visual transitions we suggest you to stick to images sized around 1024×768 in size as this will result in the smoothest presentation. Very large images can be loaded, but transitions may appear less smooth than with more modestly sized images. However of course you may want to load larger images if you need to zoom into details. Note that we have a lightroom export plugin for people with Adobe Lightroom that will help export correctly sized images if you choose to go for the smaller images. http://www.foliobook.mobi/2010/07/lightroom-export-plug-in-for-foliobook/ Some people have preferred the look of slightly larger images, up to 2000 px on a long edge, however we don’t notice any improvement ourselves and recommend the earlier size to keep memory use to a minimum.
Q2: I’ve gone into Foliobook and changed the home screen and added some pictures, but now I’ve forgotten how to get back to the home screen.
A2: You can use a pinch gesture to go back to the home screen. Or you can tap on the picture to show the menu bar at the top and select the ‘Home’ button
